Calibrating the Vinduino Sensors

The Vinduino sensors collect data about soil moisture at different depths (0.2m, 0.5m, 1m, 2m) from four points in the vineyard: 

  • Petit Verdot

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Malbec West 

  • Malbec East

This data is later visible on Viniswap:

 

In this sample set of data, taken on the 10th of August, 2020, it seems odd that the driest sensors for the Petit Verdot and Malbec East are the closest to the surface (0.2m), yet for Malbec West and Cabernet Sauvignon, the driest sensors are at 1.0m depth. Could it be that the sensors are incorrectly cabled or configured to report the incorrect depth?

One way to check that the sensors are working properly, is to pour a small amount of water into the sensor tube cap. In this example, we have poured some water (from Jacqueline' pink water bottle) into sensor tube #2, which should correspond with the 0.5m value reported by Viniswap. 

 

The last column of the above graphs clearly show a decrease in the final column, reflecting the wetting of the 0.5m sensor
