How to backup Metamask
The procedure to backup Metamask is divided in two steps:
Exporting and storing the backup into your device.
Importing the backup in MetaMask.
Exporting and storing the backup into your device
This is the step in which we are going to store a backup of our pair of keys (public/private) so that if we need to recover our wallet, we can use it to restore it. There are two ways to generate this backup, one is done mandatorily while ''Insalling and configuring' Metamask (Step 5). Although you should have already generated the seed phrase in Step 5, Metamask allows you to get it too so, in this point we will show you how tot:
Store backup seed phrase.
Store backup private keys.
It's important to notice that, importing accounts into Metamask via private keys won't include them into your seed phrase. So that, in the case you've imported via private key an account and restore your wallet via seed phrase, that account won't be restored and you will have to restore it manually using the private key.
Step 1
Click the metamask icon.
Step 2
Click on the account image. (Top right button).
Step 3
Click "Settings".
Step 4
Scroll down and click on "Reveal Seed Words".
Step 5
Enter your password and click next.
Step 6 (Saving seed phrase)
Once you get to this screen your seed phrase will be displayed in the Metamask frame. You have two options, to copy this words by clicking "Copy to clipboard" and then paste them somewhere safe or saving them as a CSV File by clicking "Save as CSV File", which will directly save this words in your computer. Remember that this passphrase must be safed somewhere accessible and secure.
Step 7 (Once per account)
Click on the three lines icon in the left top corner of the frame.
Step 8 (Once per account)
Click "Details".
Step 9 (Once per account)
Click "Export private key".
Step 10 (Once per account)
Introduce your Metamask password and click "Confirm".
Step 11 (Once per account) (Saving Private key)
Once you have introduced your password, the Metamask frame will display your private key. You have to copy this key somewhere secure and accessible. It is highly recommended to save it somewhere not technologically dependent such as a notebook.
And that's all folks! You have just saved your seed phrase backup and your private keys backup. That simple!
Importing the backup in MetaMask.
This is the step in which we are going to recover our wallet in case any trouble has occurred with the device or the app. In order to import the backup, we need the private key or the seed phrase. Remember that by restoring your account from the seed phrase won't restore those accounts imported previously via private key as they are not part of the DEN. In order to fully recover your state you might need to restore your DEN via the seed phrase and several accounts via private key. Let's start by using your seed phrase. This is the case in which you have forgotten your Metamask password or your device has lost access to your Metamask account.
Step 1
Click the Metamask icon.
Step 2
Click "Continue".
Step 3
Click "Import with seed phrase".
Step 4
Copy/paste the seed phrase previously exported and set the password you want to restore. This password can be exactly the same one used before. Click "import".
Step 5 (DEN restored)
Accept the terms by clicking "Accept" three times. And you will have finished restoring your DEN. Now we will go on to show how to import
Step 6
Click on the account image. (Top right button).
Step 7
Click "Import account".
Step 8
Introduce the private key you have exported and click "Import". By doing that you will have imported your account via private key! Remember that you must do this for each previously private key imported account. After doing so, your DEN and your wallets will be fully restored! Easy, isn't it?
